Running for GILAS
Former President and Chief Executive Officer Warner Manning of Hong Kong and Shanghais Banking Corp. (HSBC) Philippines ran in the 2007 NYC Marathon. GILAS was among his causes.
Ayala Foundation USA President Vicky Garchitorena thanking him said, “Your continued support to the program and concern for the education of our underprivileged youth are inspiring.”
“So pleased to help,” he said, “the race is an amazing experience .... a bit like running through a carnival of over 2 million people with 120 music bands and gospel singers!”
Born in Africa, Mr. Manning who is British spent part of his childhood in the Caribbean and the last two decades in various postings in Asia, including 5 years in the Philippines as HSBC President and CEO. He is presently head of Family Services Limited in Hong Kong. The HSBC opened its first branch in the Philippines in Binondo, Manila in November 1875 and a second branch in Iloilo in 1883 to serve the growing sugar industry. At the turn of the century, it financed railways that connected provincial towns across Luzon to Manila. HSBC Philippines has funded schools through GILAS in Batangas and Agusan Del Norte serving almost 6,500 students. |
