Womensphere Envision Volume 1.0
Womensphere header

As leaders, people look to us for vision. For confidence. For resolve. For courage. For hope.

During times like this, with mounting job loss, no clear light at the end of the economic tunnel, and continued streams of bad news in the media –it becomes even more important for us to take perspective, to focus on embodying great leadership, and to actively become part of the solution.

At Womensphere’sinaugural Women’s Leadership & Innovation Conference in February, we saw more than 60 women –all great leaders –who took time out of their busy lives to share wisdom, passion, energy, vision, and strength. Undaunted, they forge on, supporting fellow women, and inspiring hope and courage in others.

It is at difficult times such as now, that we are truly tested as leaders. But it is also at such times that we have the greatest opportunity to rise.

So let’s not just think about surviving the recession. Let’s think about how to rise above it. And how to bring others with us as we rise.

IDEAS: Rising Above the Recession!

n uncertain times, fear and insecurity are contagious. People look to leaders to have presence of mind and positive emotion to assure, inspire, and empower those we lead and work with. Let’s not forget the little things that make a big difference: a generous praise, a kind encouragement, a friendly invitation to lunch or coffee, a smile.  Above the noise of bad news, we must add our own voice: and let our voices be positive. Let us be bearers of good wishes. In the wild and ever-changing sea of life, let us be rocks others can count on.

Have faith. Build confidence. Have no fear.
Our mind shape our reality. We need faith and confidence to envision a world abundant with opportunities to be created. Fear and insecurity limit our options, discourage us from taking risks, and drive us collectively towards an even worse economic outlook. We need to build upon the sources of faith and confidence within us, and build a more positive reality for ourselves and for those around us.

Take this time to shine.
This is the best time to shine in striving to reach our full potential – as leaders, as people, as friends. This is a time to build deeper relationships with others. A time to rise up to challenges with courage and vision. A time to lend others a helping hand. A time to raise our hand to tackle the hard projects and deliver above expectations. And a time to help others shine.

Have no boundaries.
Whether thinking of starting a company or expanding international presence, this is a great time to travel around the world and think about global entrepreneurship. This is also a great time to think about exploring other parts of the United States that could be more attractive for jobs or business!

Think of Tokyo, Shanghai, Dubai, Vancouver, London, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Johannesburg, Bangkok, and more! Explore Kansas, Texas, Minnessota, Arizona, the Dakotas, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado, and more! This is a great time to build enterprises and expand to create jobs and help develop local economies in the US and around the world!

Let us give more of ourselves to the world.
While the US economy sputters and layoffs are announced every week, over 1 billion people live under less than $1 a day around the world. So if we take this perspective, we are still living privileged lives. What can we do to help others? Here are a few ideas: Explore taking a sabbatical to work on women’s empowerment initiatives or economic development in the US/internationally. Start a company that helps micro-entrepreneurs in developing countries sell their crafts and wares internationally. Work with an established international NGO, and see what needs to be done out in the field. Build bridges with people around the world, and use talents to benefit others who are less privileged.

Believe in a universe of possibilities.
NASA says there are 10^21 (1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) stars in our universe, our sun being just one. Ultimately, we seem so insignificant, our lives but fleeting moments. But in the brief interlude that is our existence, we really CAN choose to make a difference on this world and on the lives of others. Our heart and spirit need to be up for that task. Our imagination needs to match the infinite possibilities of the universe. If we can set our  minds free, we can think bigger, and we create opportunities where none may have existed. Our capacity to create and to achieve defined by our faith, our imagination, and our will.
